Hi Pertinax , yes it is , that large male dominated this particular one which did cause alot of tension within the group ,though there were others available. Despite the age and design of this enclosure it still makes for a great exhibit , I personally like it alot. They have added some climbing poles in between the two large rocky areas which helps aswell.
I've always thought a Hamadryas baboon colony is one of the best exhibits a zoo can offer. Paignton's 'rock' was fine once it mellowed down and has always worked well for the colony- my only grouse is that you can't get near enough to the perimeter to lean on the wall and watch them at leisure. Probably safety ovecame visibility in that case but it is its only real failing.
I wonder what the planned new exhibit will be like?
