Red-crowned Crane

Manchurian or at least Japanese, please; Red-crowned, while currently fashionable, implies a connection with Crowned Cranes.

Right, but it's all about where you put the hyphen. Red-crowned crane vs black crowned-crane, but I agree it is awkward. I always preferred Manchurian crane, myself.

I do have a fondness for Manchurian Crane, but I decided to use the modern name on this occasion (unusually for me, although I do use current names for a number of parrot species).

I use Japanese crane usually (but also red-crowned crane on occasion). I've never used Manchurian crane.

And crowned cranes are crowned cranes, not crowned-cranes. Damn modern hyphenisation if you ask me!!

Then there's the whole thing about calling Eared Pheasants 'Eared-pheasants', so no idiot thinks they have different coloured ears...

I like Japanese crane as that's the name I first came across for the species, which tends to be how I roll with these things

[Also, I love Japan and its culture, so I feel it's a great compliment to the bird to call it Japanese, and very apt since it's so often depicted in their artwork ]

Well, red-crowned crane is the most politically-correct (or neutral) name, lest China and Japan start a fight over this lovely bird. The two have 'issues'

I've always known its red-crowned crane, although I was aware of the synonyms. I've never seen crowned crane hyphenated, and if idiots are confused by eared pheasants, who cares?
