Woah, I've never heard of this species. Its name is very apt and it does look like it belongs in a horror movie.

Where does this species live?

they come from Africa. They would look good in an aviary with bleeding-heart pigeons I think......

and if it was still the 1800s you could also have blood-stained cockatoos in there!

These pretty little birds used to be commonly available from pet shops and bird dealers before the importation ban on wild caught birds . I always enjoy watching the flock in the Desert House at Paignton .

I used to have some of these very many years ago. But I can't remember the last time I saw any except for the nice flock in the above Desert House- which I also think happens to be one of Paignton's best exhibits!

These are becoming quite well established in UK aviculture, with yellow banded & orange banded mutations available.

Lovely photo. Also known as the Ribbon Finch of course; I too used to have some. Sewerby had a pair recently, but both have expired. I also like to see them in the Desert House, although on a visit about four years ago there were two dead ones in different places close to the path - and they were there all day.

I deleted the above as I'd contrived to duplicate it!

Good to hear they are becoming established in aviculture , I too kept some . I am not keen on the idea of colour mutations but that seems to happen with just about every species these days .
