Hooded parakeet

Male, sitting on artificial termite nest. Desert House, Paignton, February 17th, 2013.
I think this is one of the most beautiful of parakeets. The basic colour scheme of black, yellow and cyan would seem quite wrong - but it is splendid.

I presume this is what we call a golden shouldered parrot.
Unless there is a similar species from somewhere else.

closely related species. Golden-shouldered parrot is Psephotus chrysopterygius; hooded parrot is Psephotus dissimilis (sometimes considered conspecific however).

I agree and I know you like to photograph them at Paignton.;) Whenever I go they are usually high up on the iron girders though.

I have never seen a golden-shouldered parakeet, but there are a few hooded parakeets in Europe (I know that Antipodeans call them parrots, but I can't compromise the English usage - anything with such a long tail can't be a parrot :)).

The cock was feeding one of the hens and she was investigating nest boxes (she was in the nest hole in the artificial termite mound when I took this photo) so I couldn't just walk off: but I had to wait quite a while when they decided to take time out on one of those girders.

Saw one hopping along on the ground across the path when I visited, but unfortunately didn't get a decent shot. Got better ones on my second pass, but they were on the girders at that point.
