closely related species. Golden-shouldered parrot is Psephotus chrysopterygius; hooded parrot is Psephotus dissimilis (sometimes considered conspecific however).
I have never seen a golden-shouldered parakeet, but there are a few hooded parakeets in Europe (I know that Antipodeans call them parrots, but I can't compromise the English usage - anything with such a long tail can't be a parrot ).

I agree and I know you like to photograph them at Paignton. Whenever I go they are usually high up on the iron girders though.
The cock was feeding one of the hens and she was investigating nest boxes (she was in the nest hole in the artificial termite mound when I took this photo) so I couldn't just walk off: but I had to wait quite a while when they decided to take time out on one of those girders.
Saw one hopping along on the ground across the path when I visited, but unfortunately didn't get a decent shot. Got better ones on my second pass, but they were on the girders at that point.
