The ever-intriguing work continues on the former Swamp Monkey island.

Now a little black gate has appeared underneath the arm of the Digger. It looks like its freestanding. The tape is still in the background. I wonder what their functions are.

The lone gate does look rather bizarre at the moment. Place your bets on what will appear next ;)

When they built Croc Swamp, they put up a sign showing the plans and it was interesting to watch it taking shape from the bottom up. Not that this is another building like that, I'm sure. More likely a netted enclosure?

Interesting that there is no information about what is happening here... Maybe they think its more fun for people to have to guess.:D If its part of an enclosure, the little pint-sized gate looks like the keeper will have to squeeze in and out though.

....after wading across the weir! Thinking about it, I'm not sure how the keepers got onto the island in the Swamp Monkey days  I can't remember seeing one on there but they must have had access somehow.

Otters perhaps? Living Coasts has ASC Otters but are desperate to go back into Europeans but marketing wise, could that take away from Living Coasts?
Paignton did want to go back into Binturong and the current Coati enclosure would fit that bill. It's probably something like….., Teal or Pochard!

It could be a gate in a larger fence (which is yet to be built) to give access to a sluice in the weir to control the water flow, which could indicate that they want to raise the water level around the old swamp monkey pen, where the ditches were very shallow. That would not necessarily mean that a different species will go there - I hope they get another male swamp monkey and continue to keep them in an upgraded enclosure.

I think its curtains for Swamp Monkey in the UK now, and probably Europe too. I think the Paignton ones may well go to the US, and possibly the other few left in Europe too- there are literally only a handful, something like 2.4 or 6. (The USA has a slightly better breeding record with them)

At Paignton, given the small house they lived in is still there, I think other small primates might replace them.
