Screaming Hairy Armadillo at the Palms: Final Visit, 08/08/10

Although this was the best photo I managed (such as it is!), we did get a better view than this suggests - the armadillo was stirring and kept shifting round - sometimes sticking its head out, more often its backside!

The Palms Tropical Oasis will close permanently on 5th September 2010. Not a major zoo but always reliably interesting and somewhere I've been going for years. I made my final visit after spending the morning at Hillside. So long, old chum.

I never heard what happened to it in the end. Would be interesting to know (the species has no current listings on Zootierliste at all now).

I would go so far as to suggest this is the best common name of animal I've seen; certainly of any mammal I've seen.

Wonderful common name. Mildly surprised a blues guitarist hasn't used it.

I'm curled up in a ball,
in a hole in the ground.
This is how I feel, baby,
when you make me feel down.

I've got the screaming hairy armadillo blues.

Unlike those naked, quiet armadillos
that live down the street
I won't sit here in silence and feel down and beat.

I'm going to scream at you baby,
until your ears bleed deep.
Baby, you see, you just made a booboo.
I've got the screaming hairy armadillo blues.
And now you do too.
