I'm certainly confused by this animal, for even though zootierliste shows it as an Eastern bamboo lemur, everybody I've spoken to is fairly sure that Port Lympne house greater bamboo lemur and western bamboo lemur :s

They are labelled as Eastern and I've never heard anyone suggest otherwise (until now!). They do also have Greater/Broad-nosed Gentle Lemurs as well.

I noticed Zootierliste has this as a single animal now; there were two when I took this.

I believe there were two when I went in July, whatever they were. I just assumed they were eastern, but it was zoogiraffe that pointed out that he thought they were western. I chased it up with somebody else who thought they were western as well.

Western are the more common of the two (though still rare - Alaotran is the only gentle lemur that is anything like widespread), but this animal is Eastern. If there's now only one left, it's the only one on show in Europe.

Just occurred to me zoogiraffe was there when I took this photos as well if I remember correctly!

Here's the label from a previous visit (note subspecies griseus, not occidentalis - though I accept zoo labels are not exactly infallible!).

Yep I believe that when we visited they had both species plus the Broad-nosed,but they were down to just the one Eastern, even when we visited but I believe this animal has since died,as it cannot have been a young animal, even when it arrived at PL,as this animal came from Newquay Zoo who got it from Banham where a first saw it back in the early 90's.

Hmm.. I really don't remember seeing Western at Port Lympne. Maybe we need someone who's been more recently to report on the current situation! Zootierliste just lists 0.1 Eastern and the Greaters, which is how I remember it being.

Western are listed for Wingham (the RSCC animals), Banham and Linton (and Best, NL).

I don't see how it would help, but I've attached a photograph of the animal I saw - I don't know whether the lolling tongue in each picture is a characteristic of that particular animal, or a behaviour that is common throughout all bamboo lemurs (for I haven't seen it in the definate westerns I saw at Wingham, or in any greater or Alaotran bamboo lemur I've ever seen).

Also, the bamboo lemur I photographed at PL looked less smooth in its fur than the Western at Wingham, again I don't know if it's a species thing, just an observation I made.

Visited Port Lympne today, it I s indeed eastern (griseus) they still keep going by the sign
