Fossa enclosures at RSCC

RSCC has a young pair of Fossas. The male and female live in neighbouring enclosures (male on the left, female on the right), and they will be introduced to each other in the immediate future. The enclosure for the female is approximately the same size as for the male, only the glass panelled section is smaller. You can see some more photos about these enclosures (and about the inhabitants): 1-4. male Fossa and its enclosure (whole exhibit, and the enclosure from each side) 5-6. female Fossa and part of its enclosure.

The Fossa enclosures are located in the Madagascar Section (plus Crowned Lemurs and Red Ruffed Lemurs on display), part of it visible in this photo (Fossa enclosures are in the background).

If some denser foliage was added and some more branches for climbing put up these exhibits would be excelent

The plants have grown and extra branches for climbing have been added since I visited last summer; so they have been improved and I hope they will be able to add a little extra before they mix the animals.

Do the enclosures have a mesh or wire roof? Or are they open-topped?

It's a wire mesh roof, of the same type as the roof of the Snow Leopard enclosure and the whole of the mesh in the Clouded Leopard enclosure. I've been there when the male was showing that he could climb to the very top of the enclosure without any branches going that high (just by grabbing onto the walls) so I doubt it'd be safe to have an open-topped Fossa enclosure! :)

Wow that's pretty impressive. And are these some positive comments about the RSCC from someone who hasn't visited?! :p

I think we need to remember that criticism of a collection is actually constructive. I think most people on here would like to see this collection flourish and succeed. Many people on here have experience working with species often discussed on this forum. This isn't a bad enclosure, it could do with lots more branches, hollow logs, shelves and boxes high up, but I suspect that would ruin the effect that has been created here. However, in the context of the other exhibits, they have been pretty generous here with the palms, bamboo and logs.

Yes indeed there are some positive comments from me and i havent visited , the enclosures look quite spacious and well planted and plenty of opportunities for the animals to climb as i imagine they are aboreal in the wild, and im glad this centre keep Fossas they are quite an interesting species.
