These slow lorises are not officially on show - not labelled and with no viewing other than these little portholes behind the Owston's Palm Civet exhibit.

They were imported from Asia - most are good old Nycticebus coucang but the second one along (shown here) is very much darker and with a different texture of fur - I understand it is believed to be a Bengal Slow Loris, Nycticebus bengalensis. A lifetime first for me, if so.

And there was my thinking I'd seen not one but five sleeping furballs of Civets, turns out they were Loris instead :( I shall have to dismally add the Civets to the list of species I was quite exited at seeing but missed out on.

Ah well, at least I probably saw a Bengal Slow Loris, even if I didnt know it at the time.

The civets are pretty distinctive - with black and white bands. We only saw them because one was being brought back from the vet's. Newquay is the best palce to see them - there is viewing into the nest box.

Shaldon does the same thing.

Can someone explain what we are seeing here? Is this the back of their nest boxes? If so, I don't understand why they would curl up in the portholes when there is daylight on one side? Could the glass be one way?

It's the only part of the exhibit you can see so not sure if this is the nest boxes or just a cubby around the window, but all four windows had a loris in them. Seems to be a favourite spot - maybe it's warmer?

Interestingly, I just noticed that Sandwich lists all 3.2 lorises as Nycticebus bengalensis on ISIS. An error?
