Shrubbery pruned in the aviary for finches, 23rd May 2014

More sterling work by the Senior Assistant Keeper.
Star Finch, Spice Bird, Napoleon Weaver, Java Sparrow, African Silverbill. I think that is it at the moment. There used to be a lot more but the roof fell in under a heavy weight of snow on Boxing Day 2010 leading to the departure of most of the residents including the last of the birds (a Yellow Weaver) I had taken up to the zoo in November 2003 after a neighbour had grumbled about my aviaries. In March 2011, just as the weather was warming up, I found a Zebra Finch on a path in the gardens at Sewerby. I took it round to the zoo and put it in the hospital cage but it keeled over and died immediately. I presume it had escaped from this aviary at Christmas and survived the bad winter until then.

The aviary also contains Diamond Doves, Chinese Painted Quail and whatever the tortoises are! (There used to be Spur-thighed and Hermann's, but I'm not sure what is left - some were stolen the other year.)

No, not noise. She wanted to put her house up for sale and said the estate agent had said the aviaries were knocking thousands off its value. As it happened the house did not go up for sale as her husband did not want to move.

Do you still have the/some birds?

I have just three indoor parrots at the moment - a Senegal I've had for 14 years, a Double Yellow-headed Amazon (2 1/2 years, purchased from a member of this site) and an Orange-winged Amazon (10 days!! It was offered to the zoo but could not be accommodated so the Head Keeper kindly asked its owners if they would mind if I took it if I was interested - they didn't and I was!).

In an indoor situation do the Amazons scream a lot at certain times of day? (I'm not thinking of getting one, just interested..;) )

My Double Yellow-head does not scream, she prefers talking to herself, whistling and singing "Farmer Bill's Cowman". The Orange-wing I had previously was a quiet bird too, but the new one does scream a bit in the morning......and at various other points too, including a limited amount in the evening. It is definitely the loudest bird I have owned.

I heard the screamers do it most morning and evening, which you have pretty much confirmed- I guess these are activity peaks for them in the wild- after waking up and before going to roost.

Back to the Finch Aviary- is the area at the back (above the lap fencing) a sheltered area, or is it at one end perhaps?
