There are three indoor sections (the outdoor aviary used to be divided up) with keeper access to both the indoor and outdoor areas via a safety porch to right of this view.

So the dark area at the back above the larch lap- is that part of the covered area?

It is not very clear here due to it being in the shade, but there are three windows each with an entrance for the birds underneath. There are also nest boxes on the wall of the shelter. Looking again at the photograph I can see it maybe gives the impression of there being an open covered area, but it is not like that. I shall endeavour to take a reasonable photograph of the wall of the shelter.
