Moving in the right direction, 7th June 2014

It is, but in winter when entry to the estate is free but there is a charge for the zoo the last admission is half an hour before it closes. During the season the zoo entries are not monitored and the last entry just depends on when a member of security comes and closes the gate. There is usually an influx of zoo visitors after 4 o'clock as entry to the estate is free from then but of course the zoo is open for another hour (until 2003 there was a turnstile with a slot machine that would be put into operation after the charging period ended, although that was later then anyway. When the estate was staffed until around 9 p.m. in summer the zoo would be open until late in the evening, although I seem to remember this was ended even if estate staff were in attendance as it was decided the zoo should not be open after the zoo staff had left for the day. The turnstile was a real feature; the first charge I remember was 3d, then 6d....it had gone to 50 pence via 5 pence, 10 pence and 20 pence by the time it was removed. Zoo entry was £2.50 for adults last winter, although it is included in all season passes and they are very cheap.).
