Spice Birds - one arrived today, 27th June 2014

One of them, presumably the new one, was squabbling with an African Silverbill. A Star Finch cock arrived as well to pair up (hopefully) with the lonesome hen.

With Star finches, you can tell the sex by the amount of red on the face.( this is not my favourite Australian finch btw, they always look a bit 'sickly' to me somehow)

Spice birds, sexes identical, can only tell sex by cock singing/behaviour.

P.s. Is that a male C. P. Quail to the left of the little house or just the boarding.

Spice Birds don't do a lot for me either. I remember in Thailand , there were women with lots of them in little woven baskets outside a temple- you paid the fee and she released one for you- something to do with freeing the spirit apparently.

Mind you some of these small finches have nice character to makeup for not very exciting plumage. Silverbills are an example.
