Indian Peahen, 13th July 2014

Is it? I don't think anyone is aware of that (is the Black-shouldered not just a colour variant of the Indian though?). This bird was recruited for the zoo by one of the volunteers, I think from his grandmother.

Indian Peahen......

It is a mutation of Indian Blue Peafowl, possibly the oldest mutation. Chicks start off white, adult cocks gave the shoulder barring replaced by glossy black while the hens go like this. The only other mutation I can think of that does this is the Red Ruddy Shelduck, which hatches white and ends up darker than normal.
