More confusion! This afternoon the Head Keeper told me he had seen "the thing" and it was not something the bird was eating, but appeared to be part of its anatomy.
 
Interesting. If you look very carefully at the photo it does appear that the 'curved item' is being held in the bird's beak, and is not actually part of it.

I think I made that up...looking again it looks like an overgrown beak now- but I am still not sure. Very confusing...
 
Is it somehow attatched to the roof of the bird's upper mandible, so it can move it back and forth with its tongue?:confused: It is the same shape as the upper mandible. Just an idea....

It looks as though it could be. No sign of it this weekend though!
