Phoenicoparrus jamesi

Now sharing an exhibit with the Lesser Flamingos and some surplus Greaters. Only saw the one James - not sure if I just missed the other in the flock or if they\'re down to one now.

ISIS would appear to confirm that Slimbridge are indeed now down to 1.0 James' - see it while you can folks!

As far as I'm aware, Berlin is the only other place in Europe you can see this species.

I wonder if they are planning to recue some late hatched chicks/eggs and import them as this year has seen many chilean chicks being abandoned on the salt lakes in bolivia due to lack of food and weather changes not sure if the same has occured with andean and james flamingos has they have different nesting lakes but i know that breeding attempts were halted last year due to changes in atmosphere and weather with the james.

I ´m not sure if any South American country would allow an export of James flamingos. The breeding results there are quite bad for years, the number of chicks is not high enough to cover the natural mortality. If they rescue any eggs or hand-rear chicks, then only for a release back to the wild. The small but breeding group at Berlin is so far the last hope for the european zoo population.
