oh am glad to hear that.I know they often change where the andeans are kept as its only recently they have been put with the main flock of chileans correct me if i'm wrong? I think they used to be kept with the james in a seperate lake? I also herd about how one male kept brooding a pebble a few years ago.
How many do they have and when were the last chicks hatched? Were their andeans and james taken from the wild as I do not know of any breeding groups held in captivity.
Slimbridge haven´t bred any Andean for at least 20 years, they had only 1 or 2 eggs few years ago but no chick. The group is slowly dying out, most birds could be quite old now.
The only breeding group of both James and Andean flamingos (6-8 birds of each species) has Berlin zoo. This year, they have one James chick under 2 weeks old and two incubating pairs, last years they had also one James chick and two years ago two chicks by James (one died) and one Andean.
I don´t undestand why Berlin, Wuppertal and Slimbridge (and maybe some private holders) have never joined forces and formed one single breeding group.
It would be better if zoos joined flocks together to hold bigger groups resulting in better breeding success, clearly this is not responsible of WWT they should be sent to help boost numbers at a successful breeding collection as they are so scarce in captvity,but i guess they want to cling onto the title of the only place in europe to see all 6 flamingo species.
I would also like to see the flock of lessers kept at seaview wildlife encounter -formerly flamingo park sent to slimbridge as they are non-breeding so there is a big flock with better chances of nesting.
Although (West) Berlin Zoo haven't bred all 6 last I heard (they'd only bred Caribbeans at the Tierpark), they did display all 6 when I was last there.
