This critter is very cute. Is it an endangered species in the UK? Hopefully recovering if so?

There is a school of thought that this animal came in with the Romans somehow (don't ask me how!). I'm afraid that like most UK mammals, this is a species that you won't see easily in the wild!

@Ian: Thanks very much for the link. Very interesting. We have an endangered harvest mouse here in California that lives in salt marshes. Its habitat has been largely converted to human uses, as it sounds like the little guy in this photo's habitat has also.
 
Chester Zoo breeds and releases harvest mice in Cheshire; but does not display them, which I feel is rather a pity.
