Water shrew feeding

The keeper said that he had just changed their bedding, which might explain why they were so active. I had to break my own rules and turn up the ISO setting to get this shot. Back from the Brink exhibit, Slimbridge WWT, 12th May 2014

Awesome picture, extremely cute animal. Fearless killer. Thanks!

Do you know what they feed the shrew? Is that ground beef?

This is definitely charismatic microfauna.

I think that the food dish contains dog food (from a tin), with some pieces of fish. They are also given meal worms. If anyone knows better, please give details. There are three of these dishes for two shrews (I think).

I find them fascinating, but most visitors never see them. They stay under cover and suddenly appear, twitch their whiskers and disappear again. I have never seen them at busy times.

do they have access to water at all? they may be more visible if they had somewere to hunt for food as well as swim about looking for it rather than just "scavenge"

Yes they have a pool. And I saw one skitter through it on this visit, the first time I have ever seen one do so.

That certainly looks like tinned dog meat to me ( and fish too). Can't give you the brand though..:)
