I repeat if someone can't spot sad/unhappy animal then they're not watching them closely enough. Where standing 2ft away from them without barriers comes into it i don't know, its a zoo we're talking about not out in the wilds.
If you can't tell the difference between a happy or unhappy animal your not looking properly. It's so easy to spot that a child can do it. One give away is their eyes, as for the rest i'll leave you to discover them by watching animals carefully
But how do you know what you are seeing is actually 'Happiness'? I've been watching animals for about sixty years now but I don't know what a 'happy' animal looks like and I doubt you do either, you just think you do....
I've also been watching animals for years, as pets, on a farm, & in zoos. I was shown very early on how to tell if an animal was happy or not, they're very good at letting people know if something isn't right. If you can't see it i sugest that you take a course in animal comunication, there's at least 1 available on the internet. Try it & learn something more about animals.

I don't know if you're being sarcastic, completely naive or trying to sign people up to your animal communication course but you have most definitely chosen the wrong audience...
I think you can tell if a gorilla is happy by looking into its eyes but I don't think it works like that for a fish I've had my rabbit for about 6 years now and the only thing I can tell about her is she's very well fed
