Yes they have a very open enclosure, with trees and lots of bushes etc to hide in and climb through. They do have an inside area but it is very small and i have always seen them outside. I'll get a proper picture of the enclosure and their inside area on my next visit. They intrigue me because i haven't seen them at any other zoo's as i haven't visited Exmoor.
I had a look at Handbook of Mammals of the World Vol. 1 , as well as doing an online search for tayra pictures ( amused to find pictures of a young lady going by the name of Tayra mingling with the animal photos !!! ) . All pictures and illustrations seem to be slightly different , the head of some is almost yellow , in others there is little difference between the head and the rest of the body . Some have a light patch , others do not , those with the light patch all have it on the throat , none on the shoulder like the SLWP specimen .
HMW also refers to a yellow morph that can be found in Guyana - would be interesting to see one of them !
Haha, google image search does like to throw in some random images.
I had a quick search myself and hadn't found another with the marking like the one at SLWAP so it is a curious one. The other one they have is slightly lighter and only has a yellow spot between the shoulder blades!
Lovely species! When I visited they were off show in quarantine, nice to know they are now on exhibit.
Do you know how are both individuals going? any breeding by chance?
I first seen them actually in their enclosure in August and since then they have been very active but there is no information about them and nobody to talk to but i am becoming increasingly intrigued by them so will definitely hunt out somebody to ask about them on my next visit.
I am sure i heard somebody else around the forum mention they had known of some attempted mating but i wouldn't know to confirm although i am going to try to find out as much as i can next time
What are you so intriged about? If it is the patch in the back, I´ve seen that in every single colombian zoo with tayras, In fact the white head as the one from exmoor is very strange to my eye, as I have only seen ones like the one pictured
