No Smoking sign.

Why use two words when ninety-one will do?

The park owner hates smokers and because he does not smoke he thinks that no one else should. signs saying smoking was illegal were in the park before smoking in enclosed public places became against the law.

The owner likes wearing hats, I am surprised that he lets visitors who are bare-headed to enter.

Anothe rsign I saw but forgot to photograph implied that it was an offence under the 1981 Zoo Licensing Act for visitors to feed the animals.

I should think it would be quite permissible to forbid smoking anywhere on a private premises such as a zoo. It is common in NZ to forbid smoking in zoos. But I shouldn't think it would be illegal. You could request the person stop smoking, and you could eject them from the property if they don't comply (because technically they have entered the property under certain terms and conditions), but there is no way you could take them to court or fine them or do anything else along those lines.

In other words, it is not "against the law", simply against the rules of that particular establishment.

That's what I was getting at.. I could ban people from smoking in my garden but it would not be 'against the law'. It should be re-phrased perhaps as 'Park rules do not allow/forbid smoking'- or somesuch.

I have since got a photo for you Rob, taken on my visit on Friday! :p

hmmmm.....so according to Gill it's against the law to smoke in an open area, but not to publicly spout vile hatred in the form of homophobic rants. Nice! I'm sure that smokers are much more compliant than loud-mouth bigots.

Am I the only one that hopes his current court troubles go against him?

Just yet another example of a South Lakes lie/half truth! Clearly it is NOT against the Law to smoke outdoors at the zoo & they couldn't prosecute anyone who did! They are obviously quite entitled to ban smoking if they wish, but this sign is over the top as Bongorob said, as well as being factually incorrect(like some other signs there that appear elsewhere in the gallery) and possibly potentially illegal in itself!
Hamerton ban smoking, but just have a simple sign at the entrance saying no smoking anywhere in the zoo, if you wish to smoke please return to the car park. The smoking ban doesn't put me off visiting Hamerton and it wouldn't at South Lakes either- there are plenty of other reasons in their case!
