Ouvea horned parakeet (Eunymphicus uvaeensis)

an extremely rare species endemic to the tiny island of Ouvea in the Loyalty Islands just east of New Caledonia. It was formerly treated as a subspecies of the mainland horned parakeet (Eunymphicus cornutus) and I'm personally not sure whether it really deserves full specific status, as it seems to be largely based on its more subdued colouration and insular distribution.

There was only one on display at the Noumea Zoo, and it spent a lot of its time as shown here, on the front wire which for good photos was not ideal.

August 2010. Review here: http://www.zoochat.com/92/parc-zoologique-et-forestier-169406/
