Reactions: felis silvestris
The new pair of Brazilian Tapirs at Twycross.

Previously off-show, the on-show pair have departed and these have been moved on-show.

Is one a Juvinile compared to the other? or male and female? they look to me, different I personally don't know why due to age or something..

I wonder about this, the first being much darker I thought it wasn't the same species (baird seem to have a darker coat, well from the little research I have done)

The one on the right is the male, with the female on the left being much darker.
They are both adults, but both had some spots remaining on their legs, as with some other adult tapirs I have seen, including the male previously at the zoo.

Don't know why their colouring is so different. The female also had a much wrinklier snout (not very visible on this photo).

How odd, she doesn't have much of a mane and she looks stockier too.
Is she maybe a hybrid?

yeah I can sort of see that her proboscus isn't very pronounced.

They are both Tapirus terrestris. The female is called Muffin and originally came from Howletts Zoo via Southport. The male is called Pelle and is indeed a good few years younger than the female. He arrived at Southport Zoo around 1995 from Port Lympne. These animals bred very regularly with offspring going to Blackbrook Zoo, Trotters World and I think Jim Clubb's private Zoo plus one or two more collections.

The female suffers with a skin condition that has led to her rubbing her coat off along her sides. She really is getting on a bit now.
