male cloven-feathered dove (Drepanoptila holosericea)

an endemic pigeon that is still locally-common in forests but declining due to hunting. This is one of my favourite New Caledonian birds. It has a very oddly-shaped head, beautiful colouration, and bizarre white puffs of feathers on its legs which make a wierd noise when it flies. They are quite difficult to see in the wild because they blend in so well to the canopy where they live, but they can be heard quite readily as they produce their monotonous oow oow oow like miniature green foghorns in the trees :D

from the pictures in the field guides I wouldn't have expected the white banding to be as distinct as it is on these birds. I described it as looking like it has been sitting on a freshly-painted park bench.

Oh! This is my favourite pigeon species and I never heard about captive ones. Do you get any chanche of get feathers from it? I'm a collector and I really really want feathers of this dreamed species!

no, even if I had I wouldn't have been allowed to bring them into NZ on my return home.

I believe a major private collection in France was breeding these in the 1980s, and may still have them.

Really? I'm interested in know what collection, where is it and if it's a way of contact the owner!

The French collection I mentioned belongs to Dr Henri Quinque, who wrote an article on the Cloven-feathered Dove in the Avicultural Magazine -- you could try the AM online index.
