So it has gone from being regarded as one of the worst enclosures all the way up to the best Ape enclosure in the zoo lets hope this is setting a trend for the future
It would be better still if they landscaped it with some vegetation but the apes will just tear it up unless they hotwired small areas and that's not very practical in a fairly small enclosure with so many Bonobos needing to access it. The best plants are 'tough stuff' they can't damage too much- clumps of fast growing pampas, bamboo, knotweed etc. Even a couple of planted clumps would improve the effect enormously but I wonder if there will be any more improvements to come.
As far as 'best enclosure' goes its still pretty awful compared to most of the other Bonobo enclosures in Europe..
I wouldn't call it awful, it's average at best but there's no way I'd call it awful. I wonder why they didn't spread the climbing frames out a bit more? It's not like theyd be able to escape if they put more at the front of the enclosure.

it is still very ugly which to me makes it 'awful'. Ugliness can easily be avoided in enclosure design. Why not make a real effort toward a naturilistic design, that could be done even within an existing 'stark' enclosure and house like this one- which was originally the elephant house..
I'm sure the climbing equipment is all in the centre to avoid any danger of them trying to leap onto the walls.
Ah I see, didn't realise you meant it that way. I don't agree, as I don't care if it's ugly as long as it meets the animal's needs and they appear happy. Twycross goes neither way and fails on both accounts!
I all agree and i dont think its that ugly, Some 'Tough Plants' as you have said Pertinax would go really well. And hopefully will be soon
For an old Elephant House its pretty good.
Ah, no I was meaning it probably wasn't a great elephant house as the enclosure was all concrete, typical of the time I guess. Yes, it is a good use of it now though.
