Lowland gorilla female Asante

Showing head wound - presumably inflicted during introduction to Oumbi. Asante showed no signs of discomfort while I watched her. Paddock, New Gorilla House, Twycross 13th September 2009

As they were on their home ground, the females might have tried to stand up to him initially. This looks comparatively minor compared to what he dished out to Matadi. It look as if his canine just raked the skin in passing. (whereas in Matadi's case he probably got hold of him and then gave him the full works).

That seems a plausible scenario. I wouldn't be surprised if Matadi had bounced up to him and done something silly. I have the feeling, possibly quite unjustified, that Asante is rather slower on the uptake than Ozala; so she got a bit of stick, while Ozala quickly sized up the situation and is trying to get on the right side of Oumbi while watching out for Matadi at the same time.
If anyone knows better, please correct me.

Seems a good account, esp for young to look out for. If the female is accepted he may be more tolerate to her offspring.

I'd say you are spot on there. Asante was handraised so she's never going to be as socially aware as Ozala, plus Ozala would be trying to distract Oumbi's attention away from Matadi also. Someone said they saw one of them grooming Oumbi, I would lay bets it was Ozala, not Asante.
