For a short while after SamSam arrived (he and Yinka were only originally supposed to be kept while 'in transit' for Spain) Twycross actually had the four Silverbacks at the same time. However, Mamfe and then Sekondi died. As Yinka had died too, SamSam was kept and put in with the old females while Joe was still nextdoor. Then these two died also, within a few weeks of each other in 2008.
There was then no Silverback until 'Oumbi' arrived September 2009.
yes, Assumbo was never silverbacked at Twycross. Mambi was still only a youngster when he left though he matured at quite an early age at Paignton, then went to La Boissiere for some years and is now at Bioparco Valencia.

look on the website 'Gorillas Galore' and it should give you at least some of these details. Assumbo would have left sometime in the 1980's, I think,(he went to Chessington, but is now in Rostock). Mambi in the 90's.
SamSam was about 38 when he died (as I said above). I do not know cause of death but probably heart-related which is the major cause of death in males of this age group.
