Blackduiker ..... have a look in the archives for discussions about the ape enclosures at Twycross. It would be difficult one way or another to prove how content the orangs are (admittedly, they look in good condition) but I think (and so do quite a few others it'd seem) that their enclosure is small, sterile (1 dead tree, no planting, just lawn), lacking (much) climbing or brachiating opportunity and that the indoor area is also cramped.
Twycross's Ape enclosures may not be huge or full of plantation, but I know for certain that the care all animals at Twycross are given is of the best possible. Admittedly the ape enclosures could benefit from plantation as it would make them look much better. I do like the bononbo enclosure though and the new gorilla enclosure. I read in the 2008 annual report that a chimp house was planned to be built in the coming years to house all chimps in either one group.

As mentioned above, that has nothing to do with quality of enclosures(anywhere, not just Twycross). Even Apes still living in miserable barred cages in East European zoos will receive the best care it is possible to give them under those circumstances. But it doesn't change the enclosures that they live in though. Remember the two things are really & largely seperate issues.
