He has an upper canine tooth broken or missing...
Did you see the little photo on the Twycross website- news sheets section- it shows Oumbi outside with a confident looking Matadi swaggering nearby- I guess this was before he was attacked.
I'm wondering if the unusually long delay before they got a new male in allowed Matadi to grow and develop his confidence without any discipline,- which has resulted in the attack on him.

'Matadi' has now apparently been transferred into 'Joe's old quarters in the other house. I would think his removal is permanent- it would be more difficult still to reintroduce him after taking him out. What happens now I wonder?

'Boulas' is still expected at some time AFAIK. The problem is he may also give 'Matadi' a hard time if he is mixed with him. The other option might be for Matadi to go to Paignton.
Maybe the new group will be able to relax now, it must have caused so much tension as he seemed to spend all his time watching him when we visited and none with the females!
Is Matadi old enough to be parted from his mother? Sorry do not know anything about the family structures of gorillas! Hope his experience doesn't stop him fitting in with a batchelor group of older males.

I suppose it would be a different situation with a Batchelor group. I hope they do move him to Paignton, just to give him sometime with a silverback. Hopefully in that time he will grow up to be a good silverback himself for introduction to a breeding group of females.
