The Twycross Experience - 30/09/2011

I think this photograph of a lar gibbon (Hylobates lar) goes a long way towards summing up much of the Twycross experience.

It looks like a male Pileated gibbon (hylobates pileatus).

You could be right but it depends on which enclosure this pictures was taken in.

I would've expected a pileated gibbon to have more white on the top of it's head, but if it helps any, according to the GPS this was taken on the north east corner of the Gibbon Complex.

I'm going to go out on a limb and vote male pileated too. This is going to be so embarassing if I'm wrong.

It's definitely a male pileated gibbon, whatever the label on the enclosure may or may not have said...

Pileated. You can see the flattened hair 'tuft' above the ear.

One thing I will say for Twycross Gibbons- despite the 'cage' feel in the enclosures they have lots of good equipment, well placed to swing on/brachiate, while the neighbouring Gibbons stimulate much territorial 'singing' and general activity also.

Contrast to the sorry-looking inhabitants of some other exhibits- even modern ones, such as Marwell's Siamang enclosure where the Siamangs just sit on the ground mostly. No proper swinging facilities. no stimulation from 'rivals' to challenge with singing. Empty quiet life.

That would make it a Pileated Gibbon then.
