Yes Pertinax he is with the others now, he was very active running around so i just got him having a quiet moment here.

What is the story with him?

His name is Jambo and he is actually a (recessive) Chocolate-coloured Chimpanzee. He was produced by mating their original wildcaught Brown female(Coco) with her normal-coloured son, to produce another Chocolate one. I think, but not 100% sure on this, that the Chocolate gene seems also connected to one for Alopecia (baldness) which this Chimpanzee suffers from. He gradually lost all his hair as he became adult. There is no way they can get it to grow back. So its likely other Chocolate chimps from this strain may become similarly bald.

One thing "Jambo" does illustrate VERY clearly is just what a formidably muscled body chimps have.

I do hope Twycross won't attempt to get any more chocolate chimps bred. There is a reason why genes come to be dominant..

I presume that this gene is also responsible for his pink(ish) skin colour, which contributes to his oddity.

I imagine they have learned from this and won't deliberately breed any more-in fact they may actively try to prevent any recurrence.

I think the light skin colour is related to the brown hair(when he had it) colour.

Colchester also have a younger brown one still fully haired, which was produced by accident(?) and was also derived from this stock.
