what is all the stony structure? It sort of looks like it used to be/is going to be a water feature, with a waterfall coming down from the pile at the rear, running round in a stream at the left of picture and ending in a big pool at the front. Or is the front area simply a sand trap for digging in?

This is the adapted sea lion pool - this is how it used to look: http://www.zoochat.com/41/sealion-pool-twycross-13-09-09-a-104682/

The structure at the back used to be a waterfall feeding into the pool.

I'm not sure what it used to be Chlidonias. There is no sand that I could see. The sand coloured area that the breeze blocks and wood is covering is concrete I think, with probably an inspection hatch covered over. Maybe its a water tank that used to feed the waterfall and it used to be a penguin enclosure? I hadn't been to Twycross for about 10 years. Maybe one of the regular attendees can shed some light on it.
There is a lot of woodchip spread around for the Coati's to forage through.:)

ah, I knew it was a renovation from another enclosure but I couldn't recall what. Looks like they did a really good job on the conversion. I'd be guessing then that the covered bit at the front is a pit for pumps/drainage from when it was the pool.

It beggars belief that they would just use 3 breeze blocks to weight the sheet of wood down. Why not use a tree stump or some big stones that were actually in-keeping with the rest of the enclosure! Attention to detail can make all the difference.:(

it may be a temporary fix, but given all the mock-rock scattered around there they should have made a mock-rock cover for the hole. It would still look as fake as the other rocks but at least would be faux-natural rather than builder surplus.

The breeze blocks are still there but from my visit yesterday it appears the coatis have been separated from the bush dogs and moved to an old primate enclosure near the crowned guenon.

I did think it was an unusual mix so I assume it didn't work out ?
