I am currently going through my photo collection and trying to upload images of species (and individuals in some cases) that have now left collections (inspired by TLD's recent thread)

These two females were the final Asian Lions at Twycross before they went out of the species. The individuals pictured (Asha and Kyra) left the collection for Dudley on 17th November 2009. The enclosure is now used for Arabian Striped Hyena

Long since quietly abandoned.
Amazing just how much of that person's vision, has now been dropped or changed,to the point that it cannot be seen as an idea she had!May it long continue to be so as I still struggle to see many good ideas from that period of the zoo's history!

Not a problem,it was to be a new mixed carnivore complex to house Asian Lion,Dhole and Striped Hyena, but any of the species could be exhibited in any of the 3 outdoor exhibits! This was a very much scaled back plan that the great Mrs Boardman had that was also going to include Sumatran Tiger and Malayan Sun Bear and possibly Sloth Bear as well! The area it would have been built on now has the new Giraffe house and paddock on it!

I didn't realise there had been plans for tigers and bears there too, that would have been impressive!

In retrospect they might have been better off extending this enclosure and so keeping the Lions, rather than letting them go and not having had them again since. The indoor dens are small but no more than e.g. at Cotswold W.P. and if the outdoor enclosure was larger, I don't think anyone would have complained. By comparison, the single Hyaena in here is often invisible and probably a 'walkpast' for most visitors.

Would have been a very impressive step back towards the 1960's amount of space that all the species would have got, which is why the Tigers and Bears got dropped from the plan,as the exhibits wouldn't have been much bigger than the old Lion enclosure is!
