No chance of getting these gibbons back in - there's 22 at the most left in the wild, consisting of 2 family groups and a few solitaries.

I didn't realise they were so rare, guessing this is another species that'll die out in my lifetime. :(
Any idea when this specimen died?

I am looking at this photo and I find the resemblance to a siki gibbon (nomascus siki) remarkable, could anybody tell me why this is a Hainan gibbon and not N. siki. I am sitting at an airport, so absolutely no literature access...

I believe the females of siki, leucogenys, concolor, nastutus and hainanus are all extremely difficult to differentiate - and of course all the aforementioned taxa were once classified under Nomascus concolor. As I understand it, at this point in time Twycross held a number of what were classed at the time as Nomascus concolor - however when the species was split, only a single individual turned out to truly belong to this taxon, with all but one of the remaining animals belonging to Nomascus leucogenys. The remaining animal - this female - came from Hainan Island and as such belonged to Nomascus hainanus.

But Twycross definitely had a male N. concolor [sensu stricto] for many years. He went by the name of “Zombie”.

Yeah, that's the single animal I was referring to :)
