Javan Rhino

Unknown wild bird

This relatively small bird was around the condor exhibit, AG thinks it's a species of sparrow, again I have no idea.

Hedgesparrow, also called dunnock? If it is then it is an accentor and not a sparrow.

I think that's a dunnock (hedge sparrow) Prunella modularis, but the UK has far more LBJs than in NZ so there may be some similar ones there for confusion.

Definitely Dunnock (Prunella modularis), not a sparrow but the UK's only accentor, as bongorob says. They also have an unusual polyandrous mating system. Really fun, characterful little birds. :)

If I read any more about dunnocks I think I will go mad but if we are going to get technical they often have a Polygyandry mating system which is even more fun ;):p

Thanks -I'm obviously a little out of date on dunnock habits! :D

I like dunnocks - get quite a few of them in Hel's garden.

I have seen them dubbed "Hedge Accentor" which is extremely accurate, and thus probably stands no chance whatsoever of being adopted as the common English name.
