Just a simple clone and heal using Photoshop, only a very quick and basic attempt, you can still see where the rope originally was and it is very patchy. But I think it was enough to get the desired result of the ridding the rope as to not steal the eyes attention.

Thank-you - not that I'm any the wiser! It does not sound simple to me as I know nothing beyond the basics where computers are concerned.
