Killer Whale/Orca

killer whales are actually pretty rare in NZ. I've never seen one and I've lived my whole life here. There are three populations, with a total number of less than 200 animals. In early 2014 a stranding of nine animals in Southland (all of which died) represented about 5% of the country's total population.

I know, but I can still see other animals. The orca will be if I get lucky, and the NZ population is a favorite of mine. This photo is great and I'm crazy jealous.

I remember that stranding. Super sad.

Yes they are quite rare in New Zealand and very hard to spot. Luckily for me, I grew up by the beach on the Coromandel and sometimes saw them from my school or bedroom window.

Just before I left the country though, I was extremely lucky to get up close and personal with this group off the coast of Auckland.
