I always find it disturbing in any landscape when there are waterfalls that come from nowhere. Zoo exhibits do this too often.
Waterfalls need to make geological sense

Yes, and going back to the grassy enclosure for "Viktor" - this type of substrate in this photo would certainly help to prevent "path-ways" being created later on.

Presumably as it extends near the fence, this rocky substrate is part of the enclosure design here, and won't be hidden by the pool being made any deeper?

The area shown is the finished depth, and stone has been laid accordingly. It wasn't intended to be another small pool but they couldn't manage to drain it so are making a feature of it instead.
I seriously doubt that they will just stick a waterfall on the mound,it would look totally out of place and its not how Y.W.P. do things.
The rockwork ends about 2 feet from the "hot wire" so it will be used as a perimeter walk-way as the bears don't like to get too close to the wire.
I think it will look quite different to the other one as the banking isn't as high as the finished one. There may well be a couple of mounds of earth in this enclosure as its pretty close to being finished. I've been told that the contractors are waiting for the last safari night to arrive then it will be all go to get it finished. There are a large number of spruce type trees ready on site to plant, and they grass seed the areas, not turf them. It would cost a fortune to turf the extent of these enclosures.
