These guys are kept in one fabulous exhibit... The troop is all eldery and is being phased out, they will be replaced by a more endangered Macaque species...

You know I think you're right... Either way they are the same species still there as in the photo...

they are bonnet macaques. also in the enclosure with them is a pair of otter who just recently bcame the parents 2 two gorgeous little male pups

I almost never see those otters when I'm there... I remember the first day when they put them in there, The Zoo show film crew were following them around... After that I'd sometimes see them on the ridge, maybe once in the water but very rarely...

Can anyone confirm my suspicions that these are the only bonnet macaques in Australasia?

And also NZ Jeremy, do you know what macaque species will replace the bonnets? I thought all macaques were being phased-out of the region.

:)

I wouldn't be suprised if they were the only ones and I have no idea what they are to be replaced with...

Both of my answers are due to a sign next to the exhibit signage which reads something along the lines of,

"Please do not be worried if our macaques are losing their hair, they are very elderly and are being phased out so we can introduce a more endangered species for a breeding program"...

I suspect the sign may be misleadingly worded and they mean a more endangered species of monkey in general, rather than a more endangered species of macaque. But that's just my thinking.

You could well be right, I've never asked a staff member... Might do that if I get a chance next time I'm there... Or start a thread a keeper from Auckland, Laloba, frequents this site...

To be honest here this exhibit is so good you could believe that this was from the wild!:D Judgeing by this picture.
