Orycteropus

Old Meerkat exhibit

That enclosure, between the Cotton Terraces and the Clore, has held several species. For many years it held beavers, then porcupines, if I remember rightly, and even rhinoceros iguanas (in the summer of course).

A map from 2007 indicated ground squirrels being kept there: Any clarification?

Beavers, wonder how they fitted!

The new London Zoo meerkat exhibit appears to be much more spacious and naturalistic for this ever-popular zoo animal.

When I visited last June, there seemed to be an underground tunnel connecting the new meerkat enclosure to this one (just across the pathway.)

Well, that means the meerkats tunneling across the entire length of the Clore.

@ Marwell Dalek: Sorry, I was under the impression that this was the enclosure next to the new one (the sign in the photo states that this exhibit houses meerkats) - when we were there, a keeper was feeding them and explained that a tunnel had been constructed to give the meerkats freedom to use either exhibit.
