Scheltopusik - Auckland Zoo April 2011

Auckland Zoo April 2011.

As the only Scheltopusik in New Zealand, and the closest thing we have to a 'snake', I thought there should be a picture of this individual in the gallery. Although its sex is unknown, it is referred to as a she. She is kept in a reasonably quiet location in the zoo, and is usually active if you spend some time there.

According to the zoos website she is only on display during summer, and taken off-display over winter, which I hadn't realised. That probably makes her the only animal in New Zealand zoos to be seasonally off-display!

"she's" looking old isn't "she"; I do hope Auckland endeavours to import some more from Australia

"She" is 26 years old, and (according to wikipedia) the species can live for 50 years, so she should have a few more years left.

The only other ZAA institutions with this species are Taronga (0.2) and the Australian Reptile Park (1.1.1), but I don't remember seeing these on either of my visits, so I'm not sure if they are on display. Are they in any other collections?

I don't know. NZ zoos can import this species from Australia, and I just assumed they must be in quite a few collections there. Perhaps they are as rare as just the two collections you mentioned?

The Star Tortoises that live in the 'female' red panda enclosure next to the otters and tigers are only on display in summer also.

I seem to recall that 'she' is called Maggie (from The Zoo tv program)?

The zoo's website calls her 'Shelto', wonder where they got that name from...:D

But I think, not 100% sure, that she was called 'Shelly' on the Zoo programme.

At the Zoo the keepers call 'her' Shelto. Love the originality :P
They probably do call her Shelly as a nickname though I havnt heard it
