This is looking much better, a few more hardy shrubs and this will look wonderful ;)
 
Transplanting some mature trees into the exhibit would be ideal! Also realtively easy solving the problem of a canopy!

hardy srubs first, to keep the gorillas occupied before they bring in trees. hopefully stop them killing them off! :p
 
Trees- Eucalyptus, Acacia, Sycamore- all pretty fast growing and tough- though obviously all need to be hotwired to protect them. Clumps of Bamboo(as in Duisburg's exhibit) to break up the landscape more. Japanese Knotweed(if they could bear to introduce it) is tough and gives a tropical feel too.
 
Even just one or two trees in the centre of the island would make a world of difference, I wonder why they didn't do that originally.
