On my last vizit to London Zoo, I had the impression that the Anoa, or at least the individual I observed, would dearly love to tear one to pieces. He fairly rushed over to the edge of the enclosure as I passed. Is he still as feisty?
Looks like this has been planted up a fair amount since my last visit in January (presumably to do with the Galapagos Tortoise development). Looking good.
So, is this 50% of the former paddock, with the left-hand side now used as the giant tortoise exhibit? So the hippo summer paddock is to the right of this? Ironically, this looks better than when they had the larger, more open area.
What is the third anoa for and is it still in the giraffe house?
@ European Fauna: I've not seen a feisty anoa in this enclosure, they generally keep quite far from the visitor areas.
@ Maguari: Plant cover in this part of the enclosure is brilliant; I'm pleased that what still remains of the anoa paddock has been made to become more than adequate for its inhabitants. @johnstoni: Yes, the half nearer the reptile house and Komodos has been allocated to the tortoises. I can't remember very well, but I think this photo was either taken with my back to the hippo pool, or with my back to the entrance to Zoo World (the Casson Pavilion). I agree with your comments about it looking better (see above ). As of my last visit in June, the friendly male anoa was still frequently in the giraffe house (though it hasn't always been on display) - this is the first thing I would change about the zoo.
I think the hippo pool would have been to your right as you took this photograph?
The small paddock behind the giraffe enclosure has been used to house surplus/off exhibit hoofstock and I don't believe the anoa is meant to be on display especially. Certainly the outdoor fence has been fitted with solid boarding. The last Arabain gazelles were held in this pen until they died out, but I remember them having access to the indoor stalls in the tapir house as well as the giraffe house. I wish the land would be given to the giraffe enclosure which is IMO still much too small.
