A

old map of london zoo

It is possible to date this map approximately by the structures featured; it must be somewhere between 1905 and 1913 because:-

• The Sea Lion Pond, built in 1905, is shown.

• The Mappin Terraces do not feature, so it must be prior to 1913.

Wow. Have you got a date from when this is from?

Further to my earlier post; inspecting the map more closely, it can be dated more accurately as the Offices and Library Building wasn’t built until 1910; it must be somewhere between 1910 and 1913.

I've checked my old London Guidebooks to compare the maps with this one, unfortunately, I have only one guide between 1908 and 1913, I have the 1921 edition. On this map, there are Western Goose paddocks between the Western Aviary and the Western paddock, the future Area of the Mappin Teraces. This goose paddocks are missing in this map, so it should be published between 1910 and 1912.

@Tim May

What ape species was the zoo exhibiting in 1910? Do you know what the insect house of that time was like in terms of what their main draw exhibits were? Were they exhibiting big spiders like tarantulas?
