I know that, once the antelope started to leave the lower terrace, the zoo maintained three enclosures of Arabian oryx, while the greater kudu remained in what is now the African wild dog offshoot enclosure until around 2000 (when it housed rheas, then peccaries, then red river hogs).
Can anyone remember what lived in the cattle (now the okapi) house after the last gaur left and the last bison died, up until the One-horned rhinos arrived en route to Whipsnade? I think this would be a period of about six years.
It is astonishing how many ungulates were kept on the Cotton Terraces in the 1960s.
There was a time when the Camel House (now the Tapir House) had Bactrian camels, Arabian camels and all forms of South American camelids (i.e. llama, guanaco, vicuna and alpaca).
The Horse and Cattle House (now the Okapi House) had European bison, yak, African buffalo, anoa, onager, Przewalski’s horse, plains zebra and Hartmann’s mountain zebra simultaneously! (And, in addition to the four species of equid in this building, there were also Grevy’s zebra in the Giraffe House.)
And at the same time, there was also an extensive collection of deer and antelope on the lower level of the Cotton Terraces.
