crowned plover or lapwing

Taken 24th oct in the blackburn pavillion can someone help me out why are they called plover or lapwing (why don't we call the little ringed or ringed plover a lapwingor are these completely different species)

There are two possible answers:

Answer Part 1: The Pragmatist - 'plover' and 'lapwing' are traditional common names for medium-sized waders and although there is a traditional preference for one or the other on a species-by-species basis, so long as it's broadly clear what species you mean it doesn't really matter what you call them.

Answer Part 2: The Pedant - these are Crowned Lapwings because anything in the genus Vanellus is a lapwing; Pluvialis and Charadrius (and the odd minor genus) are plovers. This gives consistency and avoids any possible confusion.


I offer these two part-answers without prejudice. But I'm always a pedant at heart! :D
