The male in this photo(on the left) looks in poor condition, hip and rib bones showing, hump very emaciated. Maybe keeping on hardstanding permanently wasn't beneficial for them or maybe he had some other problem.

Although there is a school of thought that says that with Gaur giving them access to grazing, and the concomitant liable parasites, is risky.

Berlin's Gaur have never been kept on grass, as far as I know.
