This seems like a nice way of remembering and respecting the past without blocking the future from progressing. Was there any opposition to knocking down the parrot house to create space for a modern exhibit and if so, did this gesture do anything to mollify it?

To be honest, although I was sad to see such an old building go, the zoo has so little space and so many heritage listed buildings that it's hard to begrudge them getting rid of one unlisted building that was falling into disrepair.
I was actually expecting it to be gone completely so to find the entrance arch preserved was a nice surprise.
