Orangutan Enclosure, September 2011.

This is the larger of two enclosures for Bornean Orangs, which is L-shaped - this is the left-hand end.

Exhibit opened in ~1990, originally held Chimpanzees, which moved to Hamilton Zoo in 2005.

I'm not seeing how this is in any way a defective orangutan exhibit. It is spacious and has lots of climbing opportunities. It is comparable to those at the San Diego Zoo and Smithsonian Zoo in size and scope. Is the Auckland weather such that the orangs can be outside most of the year?

The Orang-Utans (as with every other species except a couple of reptiles) are kept outside year-round, although I imagine they stay inside in the worst weather.

to give an idea of climate, there are bromeliads and papyrus (to name two examples) growing in the zoo's gardens.
